The biggest horseback riding festival in South Tyrol, from 1st until 3rd June 2012, is dedicated to the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein. The poet and composer was no physical-fitness buff, nor was he a member of the medieval horsey set. The horseback-riding tournament held in his honor is thus a reflection both of medieval traditions and the love of equestrian sports (centering on the Haflinger breed) which has survived in South Tyrol to this day. The contests are always held in places with some connection to Oswald's life. A total of 36 teams face the challenging competition games of the Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament. Every team consists of four riders who face the competition with their banners and traditional costumes. The team with the best overall time is the winning team o the biggest medieval horse show of South Tyrol. READ MORE ABOUT OSWALD VON WOLKENSTEIN.
